Learn How to Create Your Dream Home Using the 5 Love Languages
When you walk into your home do you get that immediate feeling of peace and comfort? Do you feel it reflects your personal style, lifestyle, and how you truly live in your home? Does it reflect where you are in life? The status you’ve achieved? Are you proud to entertain family and friends in your home? Do you love how your home looks inside, as well as, outside? In other words, does your home speak your Love Language? Learn how to create your dream home using the 5 Love Languages as your guide.
By now, you’ve probably heard of, and maybe even read, the ever-popular book series The Love Languages, by Dr. Gary D. Chapman. In his books, he discusses 5 Love Language types and how each of us has a primary and secondary type. In simplistic terms, it’s how each of us needs to receive love to feel that strong, deep emotional love and connection that we crave to feel fulfilled, and therefore, live an authentic life.
Listed below, are brief descriptions (as I understand them) of each of the 5 Love Languages that Dr. Chapman discusses in his books.
Words of Affirmation – your spirit soars when you receive unsolicited compliments, are being praised, or feel appreciated and supported, and words of encouragement mean the world to you.
Physical Touch – you want and need affection – a warm embrace, a kiss, holding hands, or a gentle stroke of affection to foster that sense of security and a feeling of being loved.
Acts of Service – you appreciate acts of devotion, and when someone does something that helps ease the burden of responsibility.
Quality of Time – you feel loved and special when someone is fully listening, sharing experiences, having quality conversations, and being truly present in the moment with you.
Receiving Gifts – you simply adore when someone puts a lot of thought and effort in finding the perfect gift for you. It shows you that they really know and understand you on a deep-rooted level.
So, you’re probably wondering, what exactly does the 5 Love Languages have to do with interior design and decorating, and creating your dream home. Right? Well, you may be surprised to learn that it has more to do with it than you think.
Now before you think I’ve gone off the deep end or that I’m full of hot air, hear me out. I promise I’ll connect the dots!
First, let me state that I am a firm believer that our surroundings can deeply affect the way we think and feel, not to mention how we live in and enjoy our home. In fact, there’s been many studies on how our environments – our private homes, office buildings, hospitals, schools, etc. – all affect our well-being. I also adamantly believe that everyone deserves to live in surroundings they love – no matter the annual income or home value. I also believe that if your home doesn’t function for the way you live, then you’re doing you and your family a disservice. And finally, I’m a firm believer that your home should reflect YOU, not your mother, nor your sister, nor your neighbor – only you and your family.
Much like the 5 Love Languages Dr. Chapman writes about in his books, I believe there are Love Languages for the way we think and feel about our home.
Create your dream home using the 5 Love Languages
“Words of Affirmation” – you’ve worked hard to create a home for you and your family, so when you receive compliments on how beautifully decorated your home is and how your home reflects you and your family, it fills you with a sense of pride and accomplishment.
“Physical Touch” – you appreciate and adore things with texture – think velvet, fur, leather, linen, etc. Perhaps these textures remind you of certain memories of loved ones, and make you feel as if they’re still here with you.
“Acts of Service” – you appreciate all the hard-working appliances and gadgets in your home that help you accomplish the everyday mundane tasks easily and more efficiently.
“Quality Time” – you appreciate the privilege of spending time with family and friends making memories, in a home that you’re proud of and enjoy being in.
“Receiving Gifts” – whether given to you by loved ones or those you’ve collected on your own, you appreciate treasured items that reflect your taste and are proud to display them.
A 6th Love Language that I’ll add for the home is, “Color Soothes Your Soul”. Have you ever heard of the psychology of color? There’s been studies based on how we perceive color and how it affects us, but that’s a whole other blog post (or more), in and of itself. The jest of it is that we all have colors we’re drawn to or against for physiological and psychological reasons, and each of us reacts to color differently. Therefore, when you decorate your home with colors that you’re attracted to, it brings a sense of calm to your world…it soothes your soul.
So, with all of this in mind, I’ll ask you again…Does Your Home Speak Your Love Language?
When you walk into your home (or a specific room within your home) does it make your heart sing? Is it everything you dreamed of and more? Does the style of furniture, window treatments, artwork, etc., feel authentic to your style? Does the furniture layout of the room work for your lifestyle? Does your Kitchen and Bathrooms function for how you work and use the space? Do you love the colors of the walls, furniture, artwork, etc., that your surround yourself with daily?
If the answer to any of the questions above is a resounding NO, then my next questions are…Why are you settling? What are you waiting for? It’s time to take action and start living in a home that you truly love. You can do it! Interior design and decorating isn’t brain surgery, but there is an art to it. Know when to follow the rules and when to break them. Be willing to take risks. Have fun, relax and enjoy the ride.
Until next time…happy decorating!
